I have a question, hope you can help. I have the V3i, had some nice finds, I have better like tho with the 10x12 SEF coil compared to the DD. I was thinking about getting the 12x15. I know the silver is in the areas I hunt but may be a tad deeper. OR...was thinking about getting the E trac. I was reading today if mineralization is not too good in an area, the etrac can also only hit to depths of 5 to 6 inches? So why spend the extra money if a larger coil would do the trick? I enjoyed you posting in the Whites forum, but there you can only discuss Whites Period. I like your forum because the more you know about other coils and other machines it is helpful. I can get 8 inches on a clad dime with te 10x12 but not with the DD...Ha Ha Ha...Ron

Looks like whoever posted the program dashboard for the V3i worked hard.. but February has long since come and gone... Just wondering what happened to the completed manual programing sheet for the program settings. I say thanks to the person who obviously worked very hard, but would like to see the ability to download the file. When will it be completed..?? Does he need assistance..?? or help..?? If so, please respond when it's convenient. Thanks in advance for your efforts.

Went to Oklahoma, then to Arkansas, then back to Oklahoma. Had a nice week of R&R. Didn't hunt much. Mostly we just massacred crappie on the lake. Man, those are some tasty fish. Buddy shot a turkey. Head shot at 50 yards with a .12 guage. Not a single pellet in either breast. The dude can shoot. Then I took him to the mountains and showed him how I hunt. If ever a squirrel had a metal plate in his head, the 2fitty and I would find it.

Ole boy knows how stalk a deer, find a hog, and hit turkey in the right place. I kicked his butt with a beep stick though. The clad came from a camp along the lake. Apparently never been hunted. We have ourselves a spot. For the other finds, we had to drive up a mountain, down a valley, back up the same mountain, then ever further down the next valley on the same mountain. Found the spring, got the water, then did a little huntin' my way.

There used to be an old still up there. Found some plow points and barrel bands up there a couple of years ago, and some steel #9 wire this year. I smell whiskey. My oldest dated find is pictured first. It is part of a .12 guage re-loading tool. NEAT!!!!!!! The axe rang up like a...........dollar!
edited by Blind.In.Texas on 4/10/2011

Topic "A short hunt w/ the homeless" a message from The Beep Goes On

Went with B.I.T. to one of his spots that I hadn't been to. Got there around 8AM and headed into the woods. There were homeless camp sites, and the homeless themselves within these woods in Houston. That is not unusual, but to see so many is a reflection of the times and, although most are OK, a reminder to be safe. It was a short hunt and B.I.T. had pulled some winners out of here previously, but we had no such luck. Oh well, I hadn't been hunting in a while and it was certainly nice to get out.

B.I.T. used the V3 with the 6x10 and I ran the E-Trac with the stock coil, at least initially. I'd been wanting to try my Sunray Stealth 5" in a trashy environment and it performed very well, in my opinion. Almost all the targets came from my time with the 5". I think this coil will be my "go-to" E-Trac coil for moderately high to very dense trash, or for a smallish area where time would be well spent combing every square centimeter.

HH!
Beep
~~~
edited by The Beep Goes On on 1/22/2011
$16.67 found to date: Todays highlights modern day pocket spill and a peace medallion.
What an end to a great year, Peace! Today was a day just to dig, dig, and dig. I was mostly seaching for VDI target recognition. I found that those Zinc damn pennies everywhere and they are very pesky and hard to isolate. I was using the preloaded DFX coin and jewelry program and skipping most penny dime ids to find other harder to id VDI responses. Still using the bigfoot coil.
I am now in the mid VDI ranges 40-60 range and found most zincs to be in this range. I also noticed that when I pin point items that show deep they are actually small and shallow. This is where I found the smaller metal items like the silver piece and the cleats and the zipper puller.
Any way hope everyone enjoys the new year and see you on the other side!
$14.18 found to date: Two-Fer! I was able to go out today and try some different techniques. I found two earrings. One looks like a diamond and the other I think is silver. I found some unusual pieces as well.
I made two big changes in technique today.
I first took some old silver rings and some bullets I had found and conducted some quick VDI checks and low and behold the rings are not hitting in the quarter range where I thought silver would be but in the twist top range about 45-55 VDI. I was shocked! In the past I passed these by not really checking and finding out what is in the dirt. I have made mental notes of the pull tabs and the zinc pennies but never twist tops. Whenever I see twist top now I really wonder what I have been missing. Since the area I have been searching lately does not have too many twist tops then this is a sign of a good target.
Second was to go to exactly where the most people and action happen. I found the diamond sitting in the grass under a player bench on a side of a soccer field. I new that the holder had to be nearby and I searched one swing later and found it. This was just pure luck. But that is what happens when you are out there!
The second ear ring (silver one) I found where two long chain link fences meet for a exit/entry way to the field. There is tall grass in this area because the grade is too high to cut and is blocked by several trees. This was a perfect spot.
So these two adjustments worked well. Thanks for the help Beep! Hope Chicago was not too cold.
Good hunting Evrybody!
RMEDAD Out.
edited by RMEDAD on 12/30/2010
Topic "DFX Pinpointing Work" a message from RMEDAD
Bless my wife she is wanting to cook and wrap for Christmas and still found time to let me out of the house to go metal detect. One day I am going to find her a real nice ring. Any way I spent 1 and 1/2 hours on the field and found $3.29 in clad bringing my take since NOV 2010 to $10.81. I also found a 1945 Wheatie, (2nd one on the same site). However I am not in in for the money I am looking for jewlry. The reason I am finding clad is to hone my pinpointing skills and target ID skills. The dollar value helps me with my motivation. My goal is to find 200$ before the Dogwoods bloom. Much silver is found in the $.25 range and while I am there go ahead and dig. This time I will say that I started digging more 45-65 VDI range and found more coins hence the pennies and dimes.
I also found a chip of a dime. I thought it to be silver but it is clad. I have found pieces of silver quaters back in the north east and I wonder what folks are doing when they chip out pieces.
Anyway I think this was my most productive outing. My battery ran low, I scouted some new sites and still broke my winter record for finds. I am no longer digging low VDI therefore not much pull tabs. The crushed can was the last "joker" target I dug on my way to the car. I told my self to dig the next repeatedable sound and the can was there.
Topic "DFX Pinpointing Work" a message from RMEDAD
Found $2.84 in clad to include a wheatie today. I added a cord to my pinpointer and probe and found that I saved time thus I was able to dig more targets. I notice from my previous outings I spent a lot of time always trying to find my probe and pinpointer so by adding a cord to the tools this made recovery times shorter and easier! As you can see from the below picture and the first picture (top of the blog) my overall ratio of good finds has gone up due to several factors. One of which Beep mentioned in his last entry about the tone of silver. As I went back out I changed my audio to tone discrimate "on" and was able to cruise around and just listen for tones instead of checking every sound. Try that. Also making better use of my actual time on the ground made the odds go up.
I found a 1951 D Wheatie in a place it was not supposed to be! I think I have read before the percentage of pull tabs to rings is 100 to one. Not sure but I am keeping track just to verify. So if you can spend more time per outing going after marginal targets then your chances should go up. Gold is elusive and you have to be willing to dig those marginal targes and keep your motivation up at the same time.
I remember once when I was at an 1890s mansion that I lost my pinpointer in the leaves and spent 30 minutes of precious time searching for my pointer (not a good way to spend your time). especially around such an old site with a very limited amount of time. by adding a cord to your tools will ensure you dont lose your tools as well.
edited by RMEDAD on 12/21/2010
edited by RMEDAD on 12/21/2010
edited by RMEDAD on 12/22/2010
edited by RMEDAD on 12/22/2010
edited by RMEDAD on 12/22/2010
